There will be a free workshop with Maria Gillan and a screening of “All That Lies Between Us,” a documentary film on the life and work of Maria Mazziotti Gillan in Bridgeton, NJ.
The film features interviews with Maria as she reminisces and shares insights about her life, including her student days in Paterson when being Italian was sometimes ridiculed, and when she had the same teacher who taught one of the city’s most celebrated literary figures, poet Allen Ginsberg.
The documentary, which is written, produced and directed by Kevin Carey and Mark Hillringhouse, incorporates images of Paterson that juxtapose sad urban decay with its natural wonders, and the remnants of an industrial past with scenes from contemporary life. A Q & A with the filmmakers will follow along with Bob Evans performing his original song from the film.
Friday, May 1, 6-8 pm film screening and poetry reading with Maria; Q&A with Mark and Kevin; original music performed by Bob Evans; open reading follows
Saturday, May 2, 1-3 pm workshop with Maria
