Dedicated to the theme of writing on memory and the cultural heritage relating to Italian origin, the seminar takes place for two weeks in beautiful locations in northern Calabria and Basilicata, alternating stays in the mountains, in the heart of the Pollino National Park, and at sea, on the Calabrian Ionian coast. Participants also took a number of guided tours in the neighboring areas, including a day trip to Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019.

About 30 writers, journalists and artists interested in the history and cultures of the Italian diaspora participated. They came from Australia, Canada, Germany, England, Israel, Italy, Ghana and the United States.

Margherita Ganeri, professor of contemporary Italian literature at the University of Calabria. explained the goals of the program.
"The aim of the program is to build a broad transnational perspective on the Italian diaspora, with particular attention to the South and to Calabria. The material culture of the past and present can only be experienced by visiting the specific spaces of the diaspora, from landscapes to environments, from food to music to dance. We have tried to build a platform for dialogue and comparison between different Italian diasporas all over the world, connected to the regional spaces where traces of past migrations are still present today. The alternation of formal and informal moments will give life to a lively and committed program, which will stimulate the creativity of memory and writing, while offering participants an ideal opportunity to visit Calabria and Basilicata, two regions rich in history and beauty natural and artistic. "

After workshop sessions in the morning, afternoons were reserved for trips and free time for writing and to dialogue with writers and scholars. During the two weeks of full immersion, even moments of leisure are designed to stimulate creativity through direct contact with local, physical and human contexts.

The writings will be published in a special volume, accompanied by author's photographs, in the new series "Italian Diaspora Studies", edited by Margherita Ganeri.
