The first book of the new series from Italian Diaspora Studies (IDS) has been released. Celebrating Calabria: Writing Heritage and Memory will be available on Amazon in December 2020 in paper and ebook format.
The collection is the result of their first IDS Writing Seminar, which was held in Calabria and Basilicata in May 2019. The collection is illustrated with fifty photographs by Mark Hillringhouse who participated in the 2019 seminars.
Maria Mazziotti Gillan conducted two weeklong writing workshops as part of the Italian Diaspora Studies Writing Seminar on "Heritage and Memory." Nine of her poems written during the seminars appear in the collection. (see listing at right)
Maria's first week of this two-week seminar with her portion held in Morano Calabro in the National Park of Mount Pollino.
The second week was held in Albidona on the Ionian Coast of Calabria, at the border with Lucania, along with several field trips in the surrounding areas. You may participate in both weeks or only week one with Maria.
The 2019 program was directed by Professors Margherita Ganeri and Vito Teti, assisted by Connie Guzzo McParland. It offered as its principal writing workshop, Maria Mazziotti Gillian's "The Power of the Past: Writing Poetry to Save Your Life" which concentrated on writing about ancestries and histories.
Unfortunately, the Writing Seminars were not able to be offered in 2020 and will probably not take place in 2021 unless there is a vast improvement in the pandemic globally, but the organizers hope to offer some online presentations in 2021.
Maria Mazziotti Gillan's most recent books are the poetry and photography collection, Paterson Light and Shadow and the poetry collection, What Blooms in Winter. Her collection of poems paired with some of her paintings is The Girls in the Chartreuse Jackets. Her artist's website is MariaMazziottiGillan.com and her poetry website is MariaGillan.com.
