Honoring the Legacy of Laura Boss

Laura Boss, a celebrated New Jersey poet, died of pancreatic cancer on April 9, 2021.  In addition to her seven books and her founding and editing of Lips magazine over the last 40 years, she spent an enormous amount of time mentoring and inspiring other poets, often with her good friend and award-winning poet, Maria Gillan.

As a tribute to Laura and in an effort to continue her mission of supporting poets and poetry, the Laura Boss Poetry Foundation was created by her son. The Foundation honors her memory and will continue her poetry projects.

Laura was a poet, teacher, and editor and the Foundation plans to continue and expand upon the projects in the poetry community that she loved and supported in her lifetime.

This will include continuing the publication of the Lips poetry magazine which Laura founded in 1981 and edited up until her death.

The Foundation will also sponsor a poetry book competition with a cash prize and publication by NYQ Books. New York Quarterly is the publisher of Laura’s books, The Best Lover, and her posthumous collection, Family Promises, published this year.

Visit Laura's website to read some of her poetry and for information about Lips poetry magazine.

Maria Mazziotti Gillan's new poetry collection is When the Stars Were Still Visible (2021). Other recent publications are the poetry and photography collection, Paterson Light and Shadow and the poetry collections What Blooms in Winter and The Girls in the Chartreuse Jackets which pairs her poems with her paintings.
