My First Kiss
My first kiss was in 8th grade at Andrea Correa’s party
when Nick Rossi pulled me into an armchair with him
when Nick Rossi pulled me into an armchair with him
and clamped his nervous lips to my nervous mouth.
We looked like those kissing dolls with magnet lips.
Over Nick’s shoulder I saw Andrea kissing Joe Clemente,
her arms around his neck, her leg lifted the way
her arms around his neck, her leg lifted the way
movie stars and comic book heroines kissed,
that leg her attempt at some kind of sophistication.
I wanted desperately to feel something with Nick’s lips
but nothing happened, though I didn’t want to be the shy
little girl I still was, wanted to be passionate as the heroines
of the gothic romances I loved, but nothing happened,
little girl I still was, wanted to be passionate as the heroines
of the gothic romances I loved, but nothing happened,
except I couldn’t wait for it to end, the party, the kiss,
both of us wanting to be part of the crowd, grown-up
and sexy even though we both just wanted to go home.
