Maria Gillan and Michael Palma Italian American Writers Association Poetry Reading



The Italian American Writers Association (IAWA) was founded in 1991 to promote Italian American writing by encouraging its writing, reading, publication, distribution, translation, and study. Its members include writers, readers, editors, publishers, agents, translators, teachers, scholars, and indeed all who are interested in the progress of Italian American writing.

A reading Featuring Maria Mazziotti & Michael Palma will be held on Saturday, September 9 2:30 - 4:30 pm. Sign up for Open in the lobby. The event will be held at IAWA New York at the Jefferson Market Library, 425 6th Ave, near 9th St., 1st Floor, Willa Cather Room adjacent to Children’s Reading Room.


Maria Mazziotti Gillan's newest poetry collection is When the Stars Were Still Visible (2021). Other recent poetry collections include What Blooms in Winter and The Girls in the Chartreuse Jackets, a pairing of her poems with her paintings. Maria has published 23 books and is the Founder/Exec Dir. of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College, editor of the Paterson Literary Review, and Professor Emerita at Binghamton University, SUNY.

Michael Palma is the author of the poetry collections A Fortune in Gold, Begin in Gladness, and the forthcoming Local Colors, as well as Faithful in My Fashion: Essays on the Translation of Poetry. He has published twenty translations of modern Italian poetry, including prize-winning volumes of Guido Gozzano and Diego Valeri with Princeton University Press. His translation of the Inferno was reissued as a Norton Critical Edition in 2007 and in the Norton Library series in 2021. His fully rhymed translation of the complete Divine Comedy will be published by Liveright in 2024.
